Well I had a few runs to make today and decided to stop past CarMax to finally give this ride a twirl. It seemed to be very well equipped. Sorry for the terrible pictures but the salesman seemed somewhat impatient that I wasn’t purchasing today. I made it clear at the outset I’m doing my due diligence and I wouldn’t be purchasing. He halfheartedly mentioned I could finance it all but in the end he got the vibe.

Anyways I had to drive this car. I’m not the one to form strong opinions on cars until I’ve driven them. I left away impressed and wanted one baaaaaaaaaaaad.

IT IS NOT UNDERPOWERED.

That seems to be the main argument against it. It’s by no means fast but it is quick. I mean even the RX-8 feels adequate to me so maybe my opinion isn’t in line with most. Shifting is precise and it accelerates briskly in all gears. Taking a few turns on the designated route I could feel the back end wanting to rotate but I didn’t push it because the salesman was an older gentleman.

My cousin who is 21 came with me. She wanted to ride along but looked at the back seat. She promptly went back to the showroom to sit and wait.

All in all I like this car and 10/10 would own if the back seat was usable.

I class mine as a 3 seater as there is no way in hell anyone is sitting behind me but I have had 2 passengers albeit slightly cramped but it’s doable

It has enough power for what it is. Could it use a little more torque/better torque curve? Absolutely. But the BFRZS does not need to be any faster from the factory.

Did you pop the trunk? It’s even more useless than the back seat.

I wouldn’t wish that back seat on my worst of enemies. I’m a wee man. All of 5’5” and I wouldn’t want to sit behind myself.

the rear seat is surprising comfortable, I pushed the front passenger seat all the way forwards to get in the back to put on my oppo sticker and was surprised how comfy it was

I did a test drive of one when I was looking and it did indeed feel quick.

Then I got a FoST. Two years later I drove one at an autoshow, got to a half-mile straight and the guy told me to punch it (after also telling me I could take a hard turn...good guy) and you know what? It seemed lacking. It was fun but could use some torque.

Not enough headroom, though.

headroom is overrated

Does look like one that had some accessories added - TRD wheels and TRD exhaust from what I can tell in the pictures.

I can contort my legs to fit, but I end up way hunched over because of the glass.

I must have more height in my legs as I didn’t have to hunch over in the back

I like the look of the Subaru better. I also wish the fuel door was on the left side, and that instead of a trunk it was a notch/liftback like the tC, Eclipse, Celica, RSX/Integra, etc. because of how small the trunk opening is.

Join the club!

Kinja'd!!!

Bigger back seat, more power, still nimble (if you’re on it...).

I’d honestly leave it NA. It flows well. Almost everything could use a lil more power. 50hp and 25-50 extra torque would be welcome. But like you said the delivery also has to be right

I was just thinking this. Coupes need more hatches. So much useful space. Was trying to picture a hatch on the RX-8

It did sound nice. Also had the sport seats I believe. They were red n black and hugged me tightly

I was really looking at those last night. Think I’ll give them a shot n a test drive. I’m not crazy about the front or the hood. If it was possible to get the upgrades of the 2nd Gen with the toned down looks of the first I’d be all over it

Oh for sure it needs to remain NA. I was not implying I would boost it to increase or even out that torque curve.

I wonder what a 2.2L engine would feel like in that car. Or, if possible a better tune to even out the injector change-over.

I really do not think it needs any substantial boost in HP. That is what the aftermarket is for.

I do like those as well. But, what do you mean nimble, if you’re on it? Does it snap oversteer or something?

What’s the redline in those? 6500? I really like how you can wind out the BFRZSesessseseses (I think that’s the plural form?).

There’s tons of grip and when it lets go it’s way more of a snap than I've experienced in a Miata. It will take a bit of experience to find and exploit the cliff, but once you do it's a big reward.
